The provider said the pandemic has reached a point where it can relax its underwriting approach.

Zurich introduced restrictions to its underwriting for applicants suffering with chronic health conditions in March 2020 in reaction to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The insurer has increased the maximum sum assured for customers over 80 from £25,000 to £250,000.

Nicky Bray, chief underwriter for Zurich’s UK Life business, said: “We will continue to carefully monitor the longer-term effects of the pandemic, though we’re pleased to be in a position to relax our underwriting approach. 

“This has been less restrictive than many others and has meant that throughout the pandemic, we have been able to offer support to virtually all of our customers. However, these changes mean more people can access valuable cover.  Last year alone, our customers affected by Covid, were bolstered by payments of over £20m.”

Standard terms for all products will be available for those who are self-isolating due to being in contact with someone with Coronavirus, but only if they have not tested positive for the virus or had any symptoms.

Standard terms are available for life and critical illness customers who have tested positive or had symptoms of Coronavirus as soon as they have returned to their normal activities. Previously the insurer was postponing application for one month.

Standard terms are now available on income protection products for customers who have tested positive for Coronavirus without having any symptoms a month after they have returned to normal activities. Previously the insurer was postponing applications for 3 months.

The insurer also said it is increasing the maximum level of underwriting loadings for all age groups, meaning cover can be offered to more customers.
