The North East is the cheapest place to be a pensioner with over-65s needing an annual income of £14,782 to cover spending, according to a new survey.

Latest data from HMRC has revealed that many more pensioners are filing tax returns than younger taxpayers.

A damning report from the National Audit Office out today has revealed that 134,000 state pensioners were underpaid by an average of £8,900 each - with some underpayments dating back to 1985.
