Octopus Legacy, the AI-driven estate planning business from Octopus Group, has acquired the private client team from NewLaw Solicitors for an undisclosed sum.
The 50-person strong legal team will be added to Octopus Legacy’s legal services arm in a move which Octopus claims will increase its estate planning caseload by up to 348%.
Octopus Legacy expects to grow its caseload tenfold within 12 months following the acquisition, driven by its proprietary AI platform.
Its AI technology automates administrative tasks, handling repetitive administrative work such as document handling and case coordination. It claims its AI streamlines processes and improves communication.
Octopus claims that by taking responsibility across bereavement services, bringing legal, administrative and practical support into a single service, it can speed up the probate process as well as offering clearer fixed fees.
Sam Grice, founder and chief executive of Octopus Legacy, said: “When someone dies, families should not have to learn how a system works. Yet at the moment they are dealing with loss, they are left calling one place, then another, trying to make sense of it. One provider should take responsibility for the whole experience, not pass people between services but own it from start to finish.
“That is where AI comes in, but not in the way people often talk about it. It takes on the admin that slows everything down, so our team can spend more time with families and every family can deal directly with a person at the point of a death.”
Octopus Legacy was founded in 2016 under the name Guardian Angel, and now has served over one million clients. It joined the Octopus Group in 2022.
The Octopus Group also owns companies like Octopus Energy, Octopus Investments, Octopus Money and white label platform Seccl.
The Octopus Group has added AI tools to several of its financial services businesses.
In September 2025 it added Harry Potter-themed AI assistants to its financial advice proposition Octopus Money to help with administrative and planning tasks.
Octopus Money also uses AI through its partnership with Aveni AI to monitor and quality-check customer conversations, and said that is exploring further opportunities.
